Background:

In my first year of uni/college study, I was having a late night coffee with some fellow students and a professor, and the discussion became very thoughtful.  We were putting long hours into study, I think we all felt highly driven to pursue our goals.  But I also saw how people strived from one stage in life to the next, at each stage influenced by family and social expectations, and I wondered what was the ultimate aim for this struggling.

I explained this, and asked the group, “Where does it all lead?  What is the purpose in life?  What are we here for?”

This group had some outstanding guys in it, and I expected some insightful replies, but I was disappointed to hear, “There’s no point in asking that sort of question, it’s better not to ask.”

I wasn’t satisfied with that attitude then or now, I think we need to ask.

Question:

What is our purpose in life, what are we here for?

 I didn’t realise at the time, but King Solomon had reflected on the same sorts of questions a few thousand years ago, and recorded his thoughts in the book of Ecclesiastes.
